The Dude

The Scene

Berlin doesn’t get any more central than Mitte. While The Dude Hotel’s specific street (Koepenickerstrasse) is the antithesis of busy, all you need is to walk 5 minutes to the nearest U-bahn station---or, even better---15 minutes to the Museuminsel (Museum Island) and you’ll understand one reason The Dude’s location is so great: it’s quiet but still central. There’s a small price to pay in that if you’re in search of a wide selection of restaurants, galleries, and the like you should go a few speedy stops on the U-bahn to the neighborhood that best offers what you’re after.

The Concept

A statue of German economist Franz Hermann Schulze-Delitzch looms large in front of the charming converted mansion from 1822. But no; this is not The Dude which this eponymous hotel is named for---it’s lovingly called such thanks to its owner and host. The Dude Hotel prizes its uber-private atmosphere and independent ownership/management most highly. These origins are critical to its raison d’etre and build the foundation for fantastic hospitality and an almost mystical atmosphere that attracts travelers from all over. For one, you must ring the doorbell every single time you wish to enter (fear not---staff is on hand 24/7) and for two, keep your camera trained on the outside because it’s not welcome here. The design is modern but not overwrought in any way, and frankly it feels more like a canvas on which you create your dream stay. Seize that inspiration and put pen to paper in your complimentary Moleskine. The bar and deli is open all day and night when you need a tipple or a bite, and you can grab breakfast until 11 AM during the week and until noon on weekends. The Dude Hotel’s strict guests-only policy is tempered by its popular Brooklyn Beef Club (not to mention its extensive wine and whisky list).

The Look

The Dude Hotel is at once richly and simply designed. High-end architectural details remain from its former days as a mansion like high ceilings and beautiful hardwood floors paired with decidedly new additions of modern furniture pieces. Soft green, cream, and a rich caramel wind up through the spiraling stairwell to open into regal-minded rooms with a bright royal blue wall behind the gilded bedframe whose high ceilings are ringed with golden crown molding. The large, long windows are framed by black and white curtains to either let light in or shut it out entirely. Whether in a single or a double room, there’s always a comfy chair---be it a hyper-modern clear acrylic or classic plush red leather---and a writing desk. The suites are truly expansive, adding a clear acrylic dining room table for four and a luxurious tub.

In Short

The Dude Hotel balances the best of what used to be (architecture and exclusivity) with the best of today (décor and hospitality) in an exclusive retreat that simply begs to be enjoyed.
