The Scene

If you dropped a hypothetical pin right where the Royalton Hotel sits and drew a circle that’s two (long) blocks long, you’d hit the tops of Midtown. Glittering Times Square is no more than a 5 minute walk away--and if you want real glitter, head over to the Diamond District just a short walk from either Royalton or Times Square. The Empire State Building is a touch outside the range, but you can always pop off for some refreshment at any of the plenty of small eateries dotting the area. Yet we suspect you’re after something more. You may find it at Bryant Park or the New York Public Library or perhaps even the nearby Garment District. If a walk in the park isn’t your bag, why not buy a new one? The Macy’s Department Store is just 10 minutes away at 34th Street and 7th Avenue. Want to get away in even more style? Head to Grand Central Station for a grandiose hop on the subway.

The Concept

The Royalton Hotel’s grand exterior---actually taken from the facade of a building in France---is sure to keep you no less intrigued upon entering into this sumptuous hideaway. This is not a hotel you go to for the view; this is a hotel you go to because you enjoy breathtaking style in a refined, discreet setting. The long hallway beckons you through the lobby, the dim lighting revealing a stylish bar and restaurant whose scene has moved on from flashy to sophisticated but no less in-demand, a comfortable sunken lounge, and finally the wonderfully helpful front desk team. Some say Forty Four closes too early, but we say it only adds to its allure as a gem that is treasured when found and sought after always--especially when it’s unavailable.

The Look

The dark wood and deep brown leather only serve to accent the light neutral blues and whites of the rooms. The bed beckons with a polished headboard and its luscious oversized pillows, fulfilling its promise of a great night’s sleep. The rooms are not always large, but their layout is thoughtful and makes the most of the space given. We love the opulent round soak tubs (complete with a glittering mosaic wall and theatrical curtains) that come in some rooms (but even in standard!)--it’s sheer luxury for bath lovers. Adding to the atmosphere are the candles that are indeed meant to be lit and even a fireplace in some rooms (that does indeed work!). Unless you book an Alcove Suite or the Penthouse this is more of a hotel for staying inside, not looking outside.
