While not necessarily a destination in and of itself, NoMad’s hotels have---as of late---become the main drivers of change and bringers of style into an oft-neglected neighborhood plagued with normality. Regardless NoMad itself is far more vibrant than meets the eye. In 5 minutes, you could be in Koreatown (yes, they really do have the best kimchi in all NYC) or in 10 minutes find yourself in Macy’s. Madison Square Garden is only a 15 minute walk away---and did you know that the accompanying park has some of NYC’s most beautiful outdoor sculptures? But we know you can’t walk everywhere, so take advantage of the easy supply of buses. The subway is a 5 minute walk away from The Roger, but we prefer the buses for their scenic drives. Speaking of scenic, it’s worth noting that the Empire State Building is only 5 minutes away (on foot)---so it really is as close as it seems from room terraces.
The Roger had a former life as the Roger Williams Hotel that screamed Scandinavian, but its redesign now feels squarely New York. The signature bowtie really sets the tone---vintage but not kitschy, stylish but not snooty. You’ll find charming antique touches like golden and glass rolling butler’s tables in advantageous places for setting down your drink as you browse the paper alongside original (and often previously unseen) photographs of celebrities in the lobby. The bar encourages patrons to saddle up and select a handcrafted cocktail (try the Cucumber Vesper), offering up the expansive lobby as alternative seats to barstools. If you fancy a bite, give The Parlour a try; Chef Jonathan Morr curates a short but solid menu ranging from tapas to heartier dinner fare.
We love the easy elegance of this New York space. The pops of bright lime green and deep royal blue complement quite naturally with herringbone parquet floors and bright white walls with contemporary lighting. Even the prints of NYC landmarks behind each bed come off as stylish and not kitschy thanks to the clearly contemplated design. The use of luxurious fabrics like velvet and 100% Egyptian cotton helps The Roger feel delightfully unlived-in yet comfortable---a deliberate touch to counter the vintage style craze sweeping the city. While the Deluxe rooms do not skimp on style, two travelers may find the space on the cramped side. Springing for a Premier room is well worth the cost for us; we recommend requesting a room higher up (for better views) and with a terrace.
In an area not previously known for its style, The Roger hearkens back to its roots in an un-stuffy and thoroughly stylish way. Unwind in NYC style with a classy bunch that’s helping to put NoMad back on the map.

" ...Kept pace with its increasingly chic neighborhood by going through a complete rebranding and remodeling in 2012...but the nice thing about the Roger is that it feels tucked-away and discreet, despite its central location..."
"...Warmly welcomes travelers to the corner of 31st and Madison with a sophisticated new look..."
